The UFC flyweight title is on the line at UFC 328, as champion Joshua Van makes his first defense against top contender Tatsuro Taira on May 9 in Newark. The fight was originally slated for UFC 327 before Van suffered an injury, pushing it back less than a month to the Prudential Center.

This is the first ever UFC title fight with two combatants born in the 2000s.

Betting Trends

Taira has been the betting favorite in 8 of his 9 UFC fights, with opening odds ranging from -170 to -910. Van's only UFC loss came as a -210 favorite, a knockout loss to Charles Johnson in July 2024. Taira has never been stopped by strikes in 19 professional fights. His lone loss came on the scorecards, a loss to Royval as a -310 favorite.

Van's Historic Pace

Before people understand Joshua Van's power, they feel his pace. The 24 year old champion from Myanmar by way of Houston throws punches in clusters that blur together and pile up in ways opponents cannot process until they are hurt. He lands 8.84 significant strikes per minute. That is the highest rate in UFC history. It is simply the tempo Van operates at, round after round, and it will be the defining challenge Taira faces in Newark.

Van owns the best striking differential in flyweight history at +2.45, meaning he lands far more than he absorbs. His decision over Royval at UFC 317 set the all time UFC record for combined significant strikes in a three round fight at 419. That was a phone booth brawl between two guys who refused to back down, and Van won it going away. He also stopped Bruno Silva in the third at UFC 316 and finished Felipe Bunes in the second before that. When Van commits to his shots, they land with heavy force for a 125 pounder.

Taira's Suffocating Style

Taira does his damage in a quieter, more suffocating fashion. The 26 year old from Okinawa wraps himself around opponents like a vine, dragging them to the canvas and smothering them with submissions and ground and pound. He armbarred Jesus Aguilar in the first round. He face cranked Hyun Sung Park in the second. At UFC 323, he climbed on the back of former two time champion Brandon Moreno and hammered him until the referee had seen enough.

That Moreno finish was real. Taira became the first man to stop a fighter who survived wars with Figueiredo, Royval and Pantoja. You have to respect what that says about his ceiling. But Van is the most dangerous striker Taira has ever faced at 125 pounds, and nothing in Taira's resume suggests he is ready for that volume.

The Blueprint Already Exists

The blueprint for beating Taira already exists, and it looks a lot like what Van does naturally. Royval handed Taira his only professional loss in October 2024, using a frenetic pace and constant movement to keep the lanky fighter from settling into his positions. Royval forced Taira to strike from the outside, made him work in the open, and punished sloppy entries. Van brings that same chaos but hits harder and throws with more variety.

The grappling equation is closer than the odds suggest, but context matters. Taira's best submission sequences come from catching guys on the cage or capitalizing when opponents overcommit. Van fights smart. He stays near the center, moves laterally, and makes wrestlers pay for shooting from range. His 81 percent takedown defense has not been tested by a grappler at this level. But his footwork and awareness suggest he knows how to stay off the mat.

Taira's Vulnerability on the Feet

Taira will need to close the distance over and over to set up takedowns, and every step forward walks him into Van's counter hooks and body work. Taira has never absorbed this volume from anyone, and his striking defense leaves gaps that Van will exploit at range and in the pocket.

Van wants to make a statement after winning the belt on an injury TKO. He has said as much. Expect him to push the pace early, force Taira into firefights he cannot win, and get the finish before the championship rounds.

Taira Already Looking Past Van

Taira is already looking ahead to his first UFC flyweight title defense, assuming he beats Van. The 18-1 Japanese fighter told MMA Fighting that he expects to face Alexandre Pantoja next.

"I definitely want to fight all of the top contenders," Taira said. "What comes first would be going against Pantoja and beating him. But another dream I would say is to have a big fight in Japan, that's another thing I'm looking forward to. It's becoming an exciting division."

"Yes, I'm ready for Pantoja. Alexandre Pantoja, I met him a bunch of times. I think he's a great champ. Definitely a legendary champ, but looking at flyweight now, we have a lot of guys who are getting here at high speed with a lot of momentum. It might be a little bit different now from when he fought all the top ranked guys, but it's a completely new group of ranked fighters at flyweight.

"So I'm very excited to fight him someday soon, with me as the champ, and having that fight. I want to show the momentum and the energy that the new generation has."
